An average of about 6* treatments to entirely remove a tattoo

Laser tattoo removal involves breaking down tattoo ink fragments into smaller pieces, small enough to fit into the bloodstream and be disposed of. Typically, tattoo ink molecules are too large to move when needled into the skin, and the body engulfs them in white blood cells as a form of protection. The laser breaks down the ink each time it passes over the tattoo, beginning at the upper layers and finishing in the depths of the dermis. The process stimulates increased blood flow, aiding the body in naturally eliminating the fragmented ink particles. The broken-down ink is then transported out of the body by immune cells, contributing to the gradual fading and removal of the tattoo. See before and after tattoo removal images here.

Time between sessions is needed to allow the broken ink to move and reveal the layer underneath (around 6-8 weeks is ideal). Generally, a Picosecond laser will remove 2 layers of ink at a time – much more efficient than other laser tattoo removal options.

Not only will you need fewer sessions due to the development in technology, but opting for Pico laser tattoo removal reduces the gaps between sessions. Typically, a Q-switch laser requires 12-week intervals, meaning it could take 3 years to remove a tattoo in an average of 12 sessions. Pulse Light Clinic can perform laser tattoo removal sessions with Pico technology at intervals of as little as 4 weeks. However, 8 weeks is the recommended gap for optimum clearance and healing – an average tattoo needing 6 sessions will be gone in a year! Picosecond treatments remove most coloured inks in 1-4 sessions, unlike any other laser tattoo removal technologies that may not even entirely clear the ink.

The PicoSure 755 nm wavelength from Cynosure targets shading and Black, Blue and Green inks exceptionally well on Caucasian and light Asian skin types, with an added feature: the Boost function, which targets recalcitrant tattoos that are proving more stubborn to remove.

Yes, we do have the handpiece to perform this treatment. PicoSure and PicoSure Pro remove a minimal amount of these colours or on more olive skin types. Pulse Light Clinic has the advantage of offering multiple lasers for tattoo removal, so we use the PicoWay laser instead to target these ink colours. With an in-built 532 nm laser, we can target red, yellow and orange ink more effectively, faster and in a tailored manner.

Due to its shorter wavelength, PicoSure is exceptionally efficient at removing shading with minimal downtime. When treating fairer skin types, this is the go-to option. Studies and our results at Pulse Light Clinic show that blue ink can sometimes be gone in as little as one session, previously unheard of.

Formerly, the Ruby laser would take 10 or more sessions and sometimes never entirely remove residual blue/green ink. Blue and yellow ink are mixed with to form green inks. The blue ink will be targeted first when treating green ink, usually leaving behind the yellow. The PicoWay 532 nm can then treat the yellow ink for faster removal.
